Analytics for LinkedIn Groups: Group Statistics
I have been writing about the value of LinkedIn Groups for a very long time! Groups are great for marketing and networking. They are also a great way to expand your LinkedIn network.
LinkedIn just added a great new feature to LinkedIn Groups that will help you determine if the group is a fit for your needs. Yes, I am talking about analytics! Prior to this update, the only information you knew about the group was the number of members. This new update brings you an amazing amount of statistics about the group and its members.
Let’s take a tour of the new LinkedIn Anayltics functionality!
1. Click Groups > Your Groups from the LinkedIn main navigation bar.
2. Click the Group Statistics tool icon.

You can also get to this area from the More > Group Statistics menu item within the Group.
3. There are 4 tabs: Summary, Demographics, Growth, and Activity.
Of these tabs, Demographics and Activity seem to provide the most beneficial information.
Within the Demographics tab, you can see where in the world the membership is located, their seniority, function and industry. This is great if you are trying to join Groups to expand your LinkedIn network. By paying close attention to these details, you can ensure you are expanding your network to your desired target areas and people!
In the above example, you may choose not to join this Group if you are trying to find clients within the California area since this Group’s membership is mainly concentrated in the eastern United States and India.
The activity tab provides information on how the group is being used. One could surmise that if a group has many discussions and little comments, it’s actually being used by marketers promoting their wares and not as a forum for interaction. A Group being used as a forum would have more comments since people are interacting with each other and building on discussions.
The LinkedIn Statistics data is updated every day. You can watch the ebb and flows of a Group’s activitiy throughout the week. Don’t make any hard and fast decisions regarding a Group on the weekend since that’s typically a slow day for LinkedIn.
If you are a group owner, you may want to tout your Group by sharing the Group Statistics on the different social channels, such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter… or even email by clicking on the corresponding icons on the upper right hand side of the Group Statistics’ screen.
