I often get questions from people regarding LinkedIn. When I feel the question is shared by others, I post it here on my blog for all to read.
Question:
Hi Donna,
How are you? I have a question about LinkedIn, more specific the skills. I have 30 skills and mostly the people endorse me for the first 4, but I would like to give now more attention to other skills because I want a change in career. Is that possible change the order, giving my priority skills? Thanks Donna. –Elaine
Answer:
Hi Elaine,
What a great question! It’s important to audit your LinkedIn profile. You want to make sure everything listed is current and reflective of who you are and where you are going in your career.
Here are 3 tips to get your Skills section under control and reflective of your career vision.
1. DELETE
Go through your skills and DELETE the skills that are not applicable. Even if these skills have endorsements, delete them. You determine how people describe you. Do not use terms that are out of date or not applicable. DELETE THEM!
Get into the LinkedIn Skills section’s edit mode and click the X of the skill you want to remove.
2. REORDER
Reorder your current skills by dragging and dropping:
Reorder the skills by dragging and dropping the most valuable and descriptive of your future role to the top of the Skills list.
3. REQUEST
Ask people to endorse you for the skills you want to highlight.
Start with your close colleagues and friends. Send them a quick note via LinkedIn:
Dear Elaine,
If you were happy with the work I performed at Widgets, Inc, would you be so kind as to endorse me on LinkedIn?
It’s just a simple click of the plus button. The skills I would like you to endorse are LinkedIn Profile Writing, LinkedIn, and LinkedIn Expert.
All you need to do is visit my profile and scroll down to the LinkedIn Skills section located under my Summary.
