I recently received a question about the proper length of a LinkedIn profile. I figured it would be best to publish the question and answer it for everyone to read.
Hi Donna, I?m really curious about why some experts (including you) are saying ?use up as much space as possible?. This seems to fly in the face of the usual emphasis on brevity in writing for the web, or in writing a resume. Why do you think length is good for LinkedIn? -Thea K.
I actually deal with this topic at length in my book, LinkedIn Makeover: Professional Secrets to a POWERFUL LinkedIn Profile. The length of your profile depends on a number of things. If you are looking for a job, I normally suggest not going into too much detail because you risk disqualifying yourself. On the other hand, if the goal of your profile is to rank in searches based on a specific keyword or series of keywords, you are better served having a longer profile that mentions your keywords over and over. You see, LinkedIn search works off of keyword density. The more times your keywords appear in your profile, the better you will rank for those keywords.
Ultimately, I don’t think there is a right or wrong answer when it comes to the length of your LinkedIn profile. It really depends on effort and what you have to say. It is equally terrible to have a short profile that shows no effort or a long profile that is uninteresting and clearly copied and pasted from your resume.
My suggestion is to write from your heart. Determine your target audience and write with them in mind. Stay away from silly resume speak. Tell a story of a key achievement. Talk about your philosophy or core management value. Tell your reader why you chose your current career path and how you got to where you are today. Talk about your passions in life. Be interesting and human.
Don’t worry about the length. It is more important to be authentic to yourself.
