Most of my career branding speaking engagements require me to travel—far from home, away from my family. But last month, something rare happened: I had the opportunity to speak at a local event, right in my own backyard, with NIRI Philadelphia, a professional association for Investor Relations professionals.
This meant I could bring my 11-year-old son, Jimmy, along for the experience. I don’t normally have my family with me at events, so this was a special moment, not just for me, but for him as well. He got to see what I do, meet the attendees, and witness firsthand the impact of strong personal branding and networking.
What made this event truly memorable was the warm and engaging community. The NIRI members welcomed Jimmy with open arms, engaging him in conversations and making him feel like part of the group. Seeing this firsthand was a powerful reminder of how relationships and networking shape our careers in ways we don’t always recognize.
Jimmy had decided he wanted to sell my books in the back of the room—something my dad had dreamed of doing years ago when he told me, “If you want to be an expert, you need to write a book.” That night, 15 years later, my father’s namesake was handing out copies of my latest book. It was such a full-circle moment that my heart could barely take it.
Too often, professionals get caught up in day-to-day tasks, missing the bigger picture of how they’re positioning themselves, how they’re perceived, and how they can proactively shape their career trajectory.
During my career branding talk, I introduced my personal branding “R.I.S.E.” Framework—Revelation, Image, Shine, and Eminence—guiding attendees through the mindset shift needed to take control of their personal brand. We covered topics like:
These conversations sparked engagement, reflection, and a renewed sense of empowerment for attendees. And that’s what makes speaking so fulfilling for me, it’s about shifting perspectives and helping people recognize their own career branding potential.
What made this event even more special was the history behind it. Many attendees remembered my previous career branding presentation with NIRI Philadelphia back in 2018, and since then, I’ve had the privilege of delivering webinars for different NIRI chapters all over the country.
This particular event was made possible thanks to Nahla Azmy, a longtime client and champion of my work, who was instrumental in making it a marquee event. It’s always incredible to reconnect with organizations and see how their members have grown and evolved in their careers over the years.
On the drive home, Jimmy turned to me and said, “It wasn’t anything like I imagined!” Naturally, I asked him what he was expecting, and he replied, “A big theater with a stage and thick red velvet curtains.”
Me: “You mean The Muppet Show?”
Jimmy: “YES!”
While it wasn’t The Muppet Show, it was something even better—a night of connection, learning, and career transformation.
Personal branding isn’t about flashy self-promotion—it’s about strategic positioning, relationships, and creating a career that works for you rather than constantly chasing opportunities. When you understand the power of your brand, your network, and your story, you begin to attract the right opportunities effortlessly.
That’s what I help professionals do through my speaking engagements—whether at corporate events, industry conferences, or leadership retreats. If you’re looking for a speaker who can inspire, educate, and help your team see their careers in a whole new way, let’s connect.
Thank you to NIRI Philadelphia for an unforgettable evening. And to Jimmy, who now knows just how important personal branding—and Investor Relations—can be!
