I was a year into building my business when my father pulled me aside and said to me, “Donna, you say you are an expert but you aren’t!”
“What are you talking about? I am absolutely an expert— no one else is talking about the importance of the LinkedIn profile page! I am the only one telling people NOT to copy and paste their resume! I know every nook and cranny of LinkedIn.com! Heck, I know it better than the people who work there!”
“Donna, if you want to call yourself an expert– you need to write the book!“
This seemed like the most overwhelming challenge ever and I wasn’t sure I could do… but then my dad hit me with something bigger!
“Call up the For Dummies people, write a For Dummies book on the subject!”
My father was a big dreamer and the idea of just calling up the For Dummies people seemed ludicrous to me.
I brushed him off quickly, “Oh Dad, For Dummies book authors are experts at the top of their game, people who are successful and important.” At that time in my life, I never thought I could do it.
What I did do was write an eBook that I then expanded and self-published. The book was entitled, LinkedIn Makeover: Professional Secrets to a POWERFUL LinkedIn Profile.
I dedicated that first book to my father with the inscription, “This book is dedicated to my father who bugged me incessantly to get it finished and published. Here you go, Daddy!”
My father ordered the book from Amazon and when it arrived, he read the inscription and smiled, “I knew you could do it but it should be a For Dummies book.”
My father died 2 weeks later. A few years later, I published a second edition and I dedicated the book to his memory.
In 2016, a crazy thing happened. The acquisitions editor for the For Dummies books reached out to me and insisted I write a For Dummies book on LinkedIn profiles. As she sold me the idea, I kept thinking of my father and how proud he would be of me.
After an absolute whirlwind of deadlines and quick-paced writing, LinkedIn Profile Optimization For Dummies was published. I loved reading the reviews of the book on Amazon. I especially enjoyed the emails from people telling me how the book helped them change the way they presented themselves and the wonderful opportunities that resulted from their shift in narrative.
It was September 2019 that the acquisitions editor came knocking again, this time she wanted me to write the second edition. One would think the second edition would be easier. LinkedIn had made so many changes that it almost was like writing a new book.
The book arrived in bookstores April of 2020… perfect timing! With so many people finding their lives upended and needing to rethink their careers, I can’t imagine a better time to help others with my book.
