My LinkedIn Group: Profile Makeover: Optimization Secrets

I created my LinkedIn Group, Profile Makeover: Optimization Secrets, almost a year ago. It’s hard to admit but I never effectively marketed it or gave it much love. In the back of my mind, I’d think, “You really should spend some time and get that Group off the ground.” And then I’d pour myself a bowl of cereal and optimize someone’s LinkedIn profile.

Last Monday, everything changed. I was chatting with an acquaintance and they said, “It’s great you have a LinkedIn Group but it’s probably hurting you more than helping since you have so few members.”

He was totally right. This is a clear case of do as I say and not as I do. I tell my clients to create Groups because it’s a fantastic way to find like-minded individuals, market yourself, prospect, help, learn, etc… and here I was with an awesome LinkedIn Group just languishing. A fire was suddenly lit beneath me.

On November 28, 2011, Profile Makeover: Optimization Secrets had 208 members. Two days later, it grew to 272. By December 2nd, it was at 353 members and as I type this entry, we are at 461 members.

How did I grow it by 252 members in one week? I invited almost all of my LinkedIn contacts. Yes, I sent out 2,849 invitations… in batches of 50 since that’s a limitation LinkedIn insists upon. I also tweeted it and posted the Group link to my LinkedIn status.

I am not done. This is just the beginning. I have several other tactics I will be employing and I will report back on the most successful activities that grew my group’s membership. My goal is 1000 members.
