Hurricane Sandy Update, Part Deux

Hurricane Sandy

Wow, what a crazy couple days! Yesterday I wrote all about how I was hunkering down, waiting for the storm in style and comfort. Well, maybe an hour or two after posting that update, the power in my office went off and the winds picked up. I decided it would be best not to stick around but instead drive to my mother’s house and wait the storm out with her. The drive to her place wasn’t too bad. My sister and I walked around her house and made sure everything was either put away or tied down. As the winds got rougher, we went inside and got ready for a long evening. At first it was fun, almost like a slumber party but eventually the power went off and the storm really picked up. I don’t ever remember hearing such howling ferocity coming from outside, ever! Finally we decided it was best to just go to sleep and pray that everything would be okay.

I awoke this morning glad to be alive. What had been a violent, raging storm the night before was now a quiet calm. The power was still off and our cell phones were set on constant roaming. I walked around the house to survey the damage and although I heard many things hitting the house through the night, everything was fine. Our neighbors lost trees but otherwise no significant damage. When it seemed safe, I drove around the area and was surprised to see signs down, trees split in half, and traffic lights hanging crooked… it looked like the apocalypse.

Eventually I made it back to my house and found that the power was restored. My mother wasn’t so lucky. PECO (our electric company) is saying it may take a week before they get her electricity back up and running.

I am grateful that we were so lucky! Neither my mother nor I sustained any damage to our homes. Tomorrow I will be back in the office, returning phone calls and getting things back up and running. Thank you everyone for your patience during this crazy time. Any LinkedIn profiles that were due Monday or Tuesday, will be delivered by Thursday at the latest.

If you are located within the area that was hit by Hurricane Sandy, I hope all is well.
