Q&A: HELP! I’m Looking for a New Job but I Don’t Want My Profile To Look Like I’m Looking!

Hi Donna!

As a veteran, I took you up on your LinkedIn Profile offer for transitioning military and veterans and am optimizing my profile using your LinkedIn Makeover DIY Kit.

My struggle is that I am very interested in changing positions and possibly industries moving from manufacturing into more of a technical, data science type role or at least with a company that I can believe in. Trying to write to potential job suitors while not boldly highlighting I am actively looking to leave to my colleagues has proven to be touchy.

Do you have any advice for me?

You do not need to state that you are looking for a new job/position/company. Instead, just tell your story in a way that highlights what you do, how it helps others, and why you do it. As you craft your LinkedIn profile (About section, experiences, and accomplishments), be sure to describe and integrate your skills and strengths that would make a pivot to a technical, data science role a no-brainer.

Recruiters who are looking for the perfect candidate don’t need to be told that you are looking for a new job for them to reach out. Recruiters will always reach out as long as you look like a perfect fit/candidate. And by optimizing your LinkedIn profile in an authentic manner, not only are you proving that you are an exceptional candidate but your colleagues will see you telling your professional story and doing what they should be doing: building a personal brand.
