Worried about Losing Your Job?

Dear Donna,

It’s been more than 3 months since I started my last position. I am enjoying my work and learning new skills. The global projects I am involved in are interesting and provides a great opportunity for me to prove myself.

With that said, I do sometimes feel “afraid/worried” thinking about “what if-situation(s).” I was hoping that maybe you can provide your thoughts, I would appreciate it.

Dear B,

I am very aware of that feeling in the pit of the stomach, the sense that the other shoe will drop. An old friend of mine, Jorge Zuazola, once recommended the book, How to Stop Worrying and Start Living by Dale Carnegie. It’s a great book and one I suggest you read as well, but I also have a few other ideas for you.

If you are worried about your current role and how long you have there — the best thing you can do is INVEST IN YOURSELF and make sure you are always ready for whatever comes down your path.

• Is your resume not just updated but genuinely aligned to the next role you want/deserve?
• Is your profile impressive and a compendium of your accomplishments and value?
• Are you staying ahead of your industry and developing yourself professionally?
• Are you growing your network and networking?
• Are you helping others?

When you do these things continuously, you become the person that never looks for a job because jobs find you. When you are in that state, you will not worry because you are empowered and you know the value you bring to an organization. By making sure your professional brand is top notch, and your future is bright, you can trade in those feelings of fear and worry for excitement, confidence, and empowerment!
